Evaluation Questions and last years moderators feedback
Below are the evaluation questions which we need to answer:
1. In what ways does your film opening use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
2. How does your film opening represent particular social groups?
3. What kind of media institution might distribute your film opening and why?
4. Who would be the audience for your film opening?
5. How did you attract/address your audience?
6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this film opening?
7. Looking back at your prelim task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the final film opening?
See?? It's not good practice to have all four of you in the one vid - but I think we ought to discuss the use of maybe a max of two of you - that way, at least a discussion of some sort could take place.

Below is feedback from last years moderator:
"Planning and Research was of a proficient to excellent standard throughout and the candidates’ artefacts supported this. It is clear that candidates have been supported and encouraged to research the forms and conventions of genre as well as the industrial conventions associated with the opening of a feature film. Planning shows progression from an initial idea to final construction. The number of blog entries, and the use of ICT, was most impressive. Marking was generally in line with the agreed standard.
The constructions used forms and conventions appropriately, particularly through the use of idents and titles. The best work showed a good understanding for shot composition and used a range of shot types for effect. Most candidates had obviously very carefully considered mise-en-scene and the range of different styles were refreshing to watch.
However the evaluations were overmarked because the format chosen (video interviews embedded on blogs) was not fully exploited. Their brevity, particularly considering some were the work of up to four candidates, hindered them from discussing their responses in detail, and too often comments were superficial and not supported with appropriate examples. Candidates should remember that this component is worth as much as the Planning and Research, and this time should be reflected in their final evaluation.
This Centre has been a pleasure to moderate."
Evaluation
We've finally finished editing our film opening and uploaded it to Youtube and now we have to focus on our evaluation. Holly and I will work as a pair as we can make the evaluation more detailed and answer a question each. We are thinking of using footage from our film opening and still frames and edit them into our evaluation whilst we are answering the questions and we are looking to split the screen like the example below.

Disability
The clip below shows a physically disabled girl who is in a wheelchair, the girl acting alongside someone else all the time can represent the need for help in society which is counter typed with the girl being so clever and helpful.
In the clip below Jean from Eastenders, a bi-polar sufferer is conforming to the stereotypes of a mental person and she is acting in a peculiar and diverse manner compared to the non disabled person who is looking on in shock not knowing how to react which suggests that there is a need for non-disabled people to act in a different way when around a disabled person almost as if the disabled person is a child. They also tend to change their language and use shorter words as well as speaking slower which is more noticeable in the next clip.
This clip shows the disabled person segregating herself from the rest of the family, The producers may be trying to present her as inferior to the other characters because there is a role reversal of the mother and the daughter as the daughter is acting like the mature older character who is trying to comfort the mother who suffers from a mental disability.

BBFC
We decided to certify our film as PG because it is aimed at a wider target audience as it is whimsical and does not contain taboo language so is appropriate for younger audiences as it is not upsetting in any way and does not discuss any sensitive topics.
Parental Guidance
General viewing, but some scenes may
be unsuitable for young children
Unaccompanied children of any age may watch. A ‘PG’ film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older. However, parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children.
Discrimination
Discriminatory language or behaviour is unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly disapproved of or in an educational or historical context. Discrimination by a character with which children can readily identify is unlikely to be acceptable.
Drugs
References to illegal drugs or drug misuse must be innocuous or carry a suitable anti-drug message.
Horror
Frightening sequences should not be prolonged or intense. Fantasy settings may be a mitigating factor.
Imitable behaviour
No detail of potentially dangerous behaviour which young children are likely to copy. No glamorisation of realistic or easily accessible weapons.
Language
Mild bad language only.
Nudity
Natural nudity, with no sexual context.
Sex
Sexual activity may be implied, but should be discreet and infrequent. Mild sex references and innuendo only.
Theme
Where more serious issues are featured (for example, domestic violence) nothing in their treatment should condone unacceptable behaviour.
Violence
Moderate violence, without detail, may be allowed, if justified by its context (for example, history, comedy or fantasy).

Mise-en-scene | Sound |
The high angle shot of the pink duvet and pink pictures hanging on the wall can represent the man as feminine as he is aware of the type of bed sheets and men would not really know about things like that. | The scene begins with a non diegetic up tempo sound as he is tidying up with a smile on his face, this can represent the jolly atmosphere in the room due to gay man. The sudden cut from the non diegetic music to a diegetic ring of a doorbell represents the change in atmosphere. The diegetic script of the heterosexual woman saying ‘good luck’ may represent her not thinking homosexuals are as good with kids as heterosexual men. |
Editing | Camera angles shots, movement, composition |
There are various jump cut shots of him tidying away early in the morning which signifies gay men having to play the traditional role of a housewife as well as getting on with their other roles. | The mid shot from various different angles of the gay man being inside the house and the woman being outside the door represents a segregation of heterosexuals and homosexuals as they are separated which may show them being different to each other when in fact they are not. |
Mise-en-scene | Sound |
Neither of the men are feminine and they both look like normal heterosexual friends which gives off a true reflection of gay people as they do not label themselves in society because they are just like everyone else. | The non diegetic sound of low tempo music helps set the scene and informs the audience that they are a couple. |
Editing | Camera angles, movement, composition |
Match on action is used when they are having a conversation to show each other’s reaction to the speech being shared with each other. | The opening shot is a long shot which shows the distance between the couple, their shoulders are brushing which tells the audience that they have an usually close bond with each other. |

Easy A
I recently watched the film Easy A and thought the opening credits were really interesting as they were a simple yet effective effect of being in the mise-en-scene and there were people scurrying past as if they were not there, I thought this would not be tricky to add into the film and would have been edited in relatively quickly and I also noticed that the non diegetic opening song was synchronous with the changing shots which I thought was really good. I also liked the range of different shots used in the first two minutes alone ranging from close ups to wide shots which was a good way to set the scene as it informed the audience where it was being filmed by the objects in the shots which relate to the place.

I recently learnt about three important words that will come up in the exam and that film distributions revolves around
Production: Making films.
Distribution: Promoting films and getting them into cinemas and out on to DVD as well as any spin offs/ related media products.
Consumption: People paying at the cinema, renting or buying DVDs and downloading and purchasing related products.

Representation of Class and Status in Tv Dramas- Shameless
Shameless is a British TV drama written by the award winner Paul Abbotts. It features the Gallagher’s family who live on the Chatsworth Estate and are stereotyped as a dysfunctional family as their lives are packed with sex, drugs, violence and love affairs which all refer to the title ‘Shameless’, Also taboo language, arson, nudity, sexual references, sexual scenes, violence, drunkenness, and poverty in both genders of the working class people is represented throughout the TV drama. This refers back to the title as all the characters have a shameless approach to all these things and they also have no humiliation or disgrace when taking part in what is considered by the public as shameful.
Costume
The clothing of the characters are often revealing and cheap which represents them as working class as they make no effort to look smart which also refers to the title as some people consider them to have a shameful dress sense. The promiscuous clothing of the female characters represents them as a lower status as they are sexualised, objectified and treated as inferior by the way they dress. Men are represented as antisocial but the picture above represents men as higher status because of his posture and his shamelessness. The working class women in Shameless are shown as sexual objects with a lack of self respect

Mise-en-Scene
The Mise en scene of Shameless is dirty and cheap. Scruffy props such as trolleys are used which create a working class environment and represent the family as low status. The shabbily painted fences in the mise-en-scene also show the working class as well as the urban location and the lack of greenery. The older man has higher status in the wide shot below as it looks as if the shot has been crafted around him and he is the main focus even though there are lots of events going on around him.

There is little true representation in Shameless as people who act in this manor are a small minority compared to the bigger majority shown in Shameless. The producers have stereotypes the working class and have given them a bad label in society as well as in the media. Shameless often over exaggerates this as to have a humourable affect as it laughs at the idea of their behaviour as well as having some serious issues.

Today we stayed behind and filmed half of our film opening.I think it went really well and we didn't get stressed out and got a decent amount of work done with lots of different shots and angles. Tomorrow we are going to upload the footage and start editing and we are looking to film the rest on Saturday.

Planning
Here is an example of what a split screen scene would look like which we are thinking of including in our new film opening
We were thinking of using a a split screen in our new idea as we are going to film two simultaneous openings but instead of having 4 scenes we will have two diagonal scenes and the other two blacked out.
Here are one of the filming locations

Below is a part of the room and one of the main filming spots
Below are some possible close up shots and props relevant to our film opening

New Film Opening Idea- Red Riding Hood
After weeks and weeks of struggling over a genre and storyline for our film opening and forever changing our minds, my group and I have finally come to a decision as to what our film opening will be about. At the start of the lesson we were thinking of modernising Little Red Riding Hood and having a voiceover of a girl explaining how she got kidnapped which was sort of like a film that begins with the end and many good films have voiceovers and start at the end such as Lovely Bones, Limitless and Juno. By having a voiceover the audience understand what is going on better because it is like the film is seen from a characters perspective. It is also like someone is telling a story.
We then were thinking of lots of different things to happen during the two minutes of Red Riding Hood but we kept on going down the cliche route of tripping over a twig and/or hearing something odd and out of place and we also remembered that Little Red Riding Hood was already released as a film early last year and we want our film to be original. Below is the trailer for Red Riding Hood.
Below is an example of a snorricam and it was also used in The Hangover, We were planning on using something like this with our Red Riding Hood idea
Below is the trailer to Limitless and it is an example of a film that uses a voiceover.
Here is the trailer for The Lovely Bones which is also narrated

Netflix

I keep seeing these Netflix adverts all over the internet which I thought related to the technological convergence in the media as Netflix is using the internet advertise itself to the public and I have also heard several Netflix adverts on the radio a number of times which again is using technology to make consumers aware and advertise itself to the public.
Limitless
Last night I watched the energetic and much talked about film Limitless which won the Best Thriller award at the 2011 Scream Awards. I enjoyed this film so much and thought the variety of shots and editing tied in with the storyline really well. This film has got to be the best film of 2011 and I'm convinced that the pills the story is based on are real.

Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone- Section B Research
In 1999 Warner Bros bought the film rights to the book for a reported £1million. The film was released in the UK and the US in 2001 and recieved positive reviews. It raked in a total of $974 million at the worldwide box office and to date has made a total of $974,755,371. It was nominated for many awards and is the 11th highest grossing film of all time. It is a fantasy film about a boy who finds out he is wizard and moves out to go to Hogwarts a wizardry school.
A video for the film was released for several consoles and the film was so popular as there were so many people who had read the books and were interested in the film. It was so successful that Warner Bros went on to produce 7 others and there is also a Harry Potter World in the US as well as lots of other merchandise available worldwide. In the United States it made $33.3 million on its opening day, breaking the single day record previously held by Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The film went on to make £66.1 million in the UK alone making it the second highest-grossing film of all-time in the country after Titanic, until both were surpassed by Mamma Mia!
The film was directed by Chris Coloumbus but was originally meant to be directed by Steven Spielberg until he turned down the offer because he wanted it to be made into an animation.
